Nergaard said he is excited about winning the Gold Cup as it is a traditional trophy with a lot of prestige.
"We worked hard to qualify to get a shot at it and to win only makes the occasion more special," said Nergaard.
Nergaard said this win marks number six for him as he won three with his crew and three as a part of a crew with his dad.
He said the condition was favorable for him and only made work easy for him and his crew.
"We however had a challenge in the first race with the English team and in the second race the Dutch team put up a fight against us, but we were able to hold them off," said Nergaard.
Nergaard said he won't be able to sail in all of the Duke of Edinburgh races as they will only challenge the race on today and Saturday.
"Our main focus is actually the World Championship which starts on Monday as the defending world champion will be here and he is going to be tough," said Nergaard
During the Gold Cup Race between Great Britain, Netherlands and Norway, the Duke of Edinburgh race got underway with Bahamian Gavin McKinney taking the first race.
McKinney said so far three races have been completed in the Duke of Edinburgh series and he hopes to win more.
"As the competition goes, more boats will join and it will only get tougher as the Gold Cup is completed," said McKinney.
McKinney said they too are looking forward to the World Championships with hopes of doing well there.
In the second and third race of the Duke of Edinburgh, the Netherlands won.
