The World 5.5 Sailing Championships got underway on Monday at the Montague Harbour with the defending champions Flavio Marazzi, Stefan Haftka and Renato Marazzi of Switzerland sailing the "Ali Baba" to a commanding leading. Flavio Marazzi said the race was excellent for him, pointing out that they got an early lead and maintained it with their closest challengers about a mile away. "The weather conditions were favorable for us and we took advantage of it. "We are going to do our best to win this, but there are a lot of good boats and sailors here so a win was very important on Monday," said Marazzi. Gavin McKinney, Peter Hauff and Lars Horn Johannesen sailed the John B Monday and were successful in finishing second. McKinney and the crew came from seventh place on their last lap to secure the second place spot. Peter Hauff said the race was excellent although they moved out late due to a wind shift at the start. "The weather conditions were okay. We like to sail in any kind of conditions, but we had to see the course that the Swiss were taking and we were able too. "We have caught the Swiss before and I believe we can catch them again. But, they have been sailing a little more than us this year because they are heading to the Olympic Games," said Hauff. The organizing committee informed that the weather conditions for today would allow the sailors to sail when competition begins at 10:00am.
