Norway Claims World 5.5 Metre Championship

By : Bernard Newbold
Artemis XlV, skippered by Kristian Nergaard came away with the big world championship title.
The World 5.5 Metre Championships came to a close on Friday with the Artemis XlV out of Norway captained by Kristian Nergaard being declared the new champion. Defending champion Switzerland was second and the Bahamas settled for the bronze medal.

After six races on Thursday, Nergaard had already collected a total of 15 points with his closes challenger, Switzerland with 21 points and Bahamas with 23 points. The eventual winner had no need to race in the seventh race as his challengers' best on Friday could not overtake.

Using his point total from Thursday, he did not race on Friday with the other 17 competitors.

The battle would however be between Switzerland and the Bahamas for the silver and bronze.

Switzerland's Ali Baba snatched the silver away from the Bahamian John B.

Bahamian Gavin McKinney said at the start line he was pushed across, resulting in a false start and he had to restart.

"This cost us big time as we lost out on the silver medal, but I am excited about winning a medal as we worked hard for it, " said McKinney.

This was McKinney's fifth world bronze medal. He achieved the bronze also in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2007.

"My team and I are looking forward to the hopefully attending the European Championships in August of this year."

"We are now planning ahead for the 2009 World Championships that will be held in Norway," said McKinney.

Bahamas Sailing Association executive Jimmy Lowe said he is impressed with the end results of the World Championships especially with McKinney winning a medal.

Lowe said from the results of the Scandinavian Cup, he knew Norway would have been a strong challenger for the world title against Switzerland.

"The Ali Baba from Switzerland is a professional boat as it is sails 250 days a year. It is a real surprise they lost, " said Lowe.

Lowe said McKinney proved to be among the best once again, but made a mistake at the start line, which cost him.

Lowe also revealed that the Bahamas as of ThUrsday past was name the host country for the 2009 Sunfish World Championships to be held around late October or early November.

He also touched on the Youth Development Programme that it is still in the forefront

with a priority to get Optimist Sailing in the public schools in Freeport and the Family Island as it has already begun in Nassau.

"Once all of this is in place, we hope by the 2016 Olympic Games, the Bahamas would once again be in sailing," said Lowe.
