COB Track And Field Classic Deemed A Success

Bernard Newbold
The College of The Bahamas Athletic Department held its 2nd annual Track and Field Classic on Saturday at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium and it was dubbed a huge success. Assistant Athletic Director and head track and field coach Bradley Cooper who was also the head coach of this years third place Carifta Track and Field Team, said this year they had more participation than the inaugural classic in 2008 and the fan support this year grew as well.

He commended the performances of the athletes in the under-9 to under-15 age groups because they only got the chance to participate in the relay events.

"We are in our third year as a track and field team and we are progressing every time we perform. The athletes are getting into the groove of things and as we go into our fourth year we expect even better performances," said Cooper.

With the College now granting scholarships, Cooper informed that eight athletes would receive scholarship opportunities to represent COB in track and field during the 2009-2010 academic year.

He noted the College is looking to increase the size of its track and field team with its scholarship recipients and walk-on students already enrolled at the college.

On Saturday, with the wind conditions not favourable for legal performances, Club Monica's V'Alonee Robinson took advantage and ran a seasons best 11.65 seconds to win the open women's 100 meters.

Robinson also added the long jump victory to her list leaping 5.96 meters (19'6") under the windy conditions.

Minutes prior to Robinsons' 100 meter victory her teammate Carifta Games under 17 girls 100 meter finalist Shaunae Miller challenge the under 17 girls 400 meters.

Using her long striding pattern, she was able to power pass T-Bird Flyer's Teshon Adderley who was also a member of the Carifta team placing fourth in the 800 meter finals.

Miller won Saturday’s 400m event in a personal best 56.79 seconds while Adderley was second in 57.11 seconds.

On the men's side, it was a great outing for Carifta triple jump silver medalist J'Vente Deveaux who was able to put his three phases together in the event and powered down the windy runway with a leap of 15.47 meters (51'5").
