Stuart Leads Bahamian Charge At NCAA Regional Championships

By Bernard Newbold
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Regional Track and Field Championships concluded over the weekend with long jump sensation Bianca Stuart leading the charge of Bahamians competing in different regions across the United States of America representing various universities.

On Friday at the Mid East Championships the senior competing in her final regional meet for Southern Illinois University won the women's long jump in a new regional record of 6.54 meters (21 feet 5.5 inches) erasing the old mark of 6.52 meters set back in 2005 by Tianna Madison of the University of Tennessee.

In the first round of the competition, Stuart fouled on her jump leaving the window open for Wendy Copeland a junior from Mississippi State University to take the lead on her first jump of 6.42 meters.

However, in the second round Stuart responded with a jump of 6.28 meters to move into second place. But then she placed added pressure on herself when she fouled her third and fifth round jumps with her fourth round effort at just 6.19 meters.

With the pressure on, the senior who was looking to hit at least the International Association of Athletic Federation 'B' standard for the World Championships, gathered her self and soared to her best performance of the season on her final attempt to set the record.

Also at the Mid East Championships, Auburn University sophomore Cache Armbrister took a second place finish in the women's 200 meters in a best performance of 23.22 seconds.

Samantha Henry a junior at Louisiana State University won the event in 22.80 seconds setting a new stadium record while Belmont University senior Lynette Rivers collected the third spot in 23.28 seconds.

Meanwhile, over at the East Regional Championships, former Dickinson State University Blue Hawk now competing for the University of South Florida Antillio Bastian, had a good outing in the men's triple jump.

He finished third in flight two of the event with a best effort of 15.44 meters (50 feet 8 inches). However after all of the results from the three flights were calculated, Bastian finished ninth and just missed picking up a point for his team.

Alphonso Jordan a junior at Georgia Tech University was able to secure the win with a best leap of 16.39 meters (53 feet 9.25 inches).

From the Mid West Championship competing for the University of Houston, freshman Lamar Delaney won flight two of the men's triple jump but finished 11th overall with a best effort of 15.45 meters (50 feet 8.25 inches). Winning the event was Will Clyde in a new regional record of 16.81 meters (55 feet 2 inches).

At the West Championships, University of Los Angeles California freshman Karlton Rolle had an impressive outing in the men's 200 meters.

Although Rolle finished fifth in the finals of the event in 21.34 seconds, he was able to record another Pan American Junior Championship qualification mark of 21.16 seconds surpassing the standard of 21.30 seconds. He also qualified for the NCAA National Championships that will be held in Arkansas.

Washington State University senior Justin Woods won the event in 20.90 seconds.
