The Acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Charles Maynard extended congratulations to Bahamian tennis star Mark Knowles on his victory at Wimbledon in mixed doubles last weekend.
The Minister said, "On behalf of the members of the National Sporting Community and as the acting Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, I wish to convey extreme gratitude for yet another epic performance by local lawn tennis hero Knowles, who teamed with his mixed doubles partner, Groenfeld to win the only Grand Show title that had eluded him.""Indeed with his latest championship victory at Wimbledon, Knowles has elevated his iconic status in Bahamian sports, achieving what few lawn tennis players the world over have managed to accomplish, that having won at least one title at the US Open, The Australian Open, the French Open (Roland Garros) and the British Open (Wimbledon),”continued Maynard.
He added that such a remarkable achievement does not go unnoticed by his ministry and the people of The Bahamas and the international community. He said, “this Commonwealth of Islands is proud of it's son and will forever stand behind him, providing him with an avalanche of good will and prayerful sustenance.”
"On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas then, I wish to confirm the gratitude and joy which the recent accomplishments of Knowles has brought to Bahamians everywhere.”
The government also extended best wishes to Knowles’ mother Vikki Knowles, who he said “must be congratulated for personally grooming such an outstanding Bahamian Champion."
