The Commonwealth American Football League will have many of its local football stars on display helping with the leagues third annual summer football camp set for this Saturday August 1st at the Tom ‘Bird’ Grant Park on the AF Adderley School Field.
The Commonwealth American Football League will have many of its local football stars on display helping with the leagues third annual summer football camp set for this Saturday August 1st at the Tom ‘Bird’ Grant Park on the AF Adderley School Field.
The one day camp is free and is open to all youngsters between the ages of 7-17 years old who are interested in the game of American Football. They begin at 9am and will go until 3pm.
According to one of the organizer s Jim LaRoda the camp will include instructions from CAFL coaches including Obie Roberts from the John Bull Jets,
Lawrence Hepburn from the Stingrays,Tyrone Rolle of the Stingrays, Ron Rollins and LaRoda himself who is an assistant coach with the Jets.
The coaches will be assisted by numerous star players form the league including the champion Orry J. Sands Pros Defensive MVP of the year in lineman Arthur Thompson, former Langston University Defensive End Demetrius Bastian, wide receiver Kris Kemp, who is in his third year at Taylor University in Indiana, along with Drameco Moore who is a free safety at Florida Atlantic.
Also exppected to be there is all-star defensive back Phillip "Philthy" Rahming, along with former Jacksonville State College wide receiver Elden Ferguson III.
In a press statement released on Tuesday LaRoda said they are also inviting former CAFL legends that played college ball to work with the kids, including players like Demar Greenslade of Langston, Mike Wilson of Bethune Cookman and Curtis Newbold of Chatanooga at Tennessee, in addition to players that are currently in college like offensive lineman Ian Symonette and Daniel Adderley who play for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He said their presence would be very important to the young campers.
Additionally, LaRoda says they are hoping for a surprise visit from professional Godfrey Ellis who plays with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football Leauge.
"The young campers will be taught the basics of American Football, and then go into drills and skills for every position in the game," LaRoda explained.
The day will end with a series of flag football games that would be managed by members of The Bahamas Flag Football Association.
