BAAA Officially Names World Team To Berlin

Bernard Newbold
The local track and field federation officially named its team to compete at the International Association of Athletic Federations World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Germany from August 15th-23rd.

The local track and field federation officially named its team to compete at the International Association of Athletic Federations World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, Germany from August 15th-23rd.
The team will consist of 24 athletes with veterans Chandra Sturrup, Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, Levan ‘Superman’ Sands and Chris Brown heading the field.
Following a fitness test held on Friday at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, multiple World Championships 4x400 meter relay silver medalist Nathaniel McKinney was confirmed to the team for the men's 200 meters after running 20.6 seconds in a trial run.
McKinney had already met the ‘B’ standard for the World Championship after a 20.67 second clocking earlier this season.
Also on Friday, Andretti Bain was subject to a fitness test and was confirmed to the team for the men's 4x400 meter relay after running 47.6 seconds.  It is uncertain if Bain whop was third at the Nationals will run the open 400 meters at the World Championships.
Latoy Williams, Michael Mathieu and former World 400 meter champion Avard Moncur were all confirmed to the team for the men's 4x400 meter relay.
Derrick Atkins 100m, Adrian Griffith 100m, Chris Brown 400m, Ramon Miller 400m, Shamar Sands 110m hurdles, Leevan Sands - Triple Jump, Osbourne Moxey - Long Jump, Donald Thomas Trevor

Barry in the High Jump.
On the women's side Ferguson-McKenzie will challenge the 100 and 200 meters, Sturrup 100m, Sheniqua Ferguson 200m, Christine Amertil 400m, Timicka Clarke, and Jernise Saunders 4x100m, Sasha Rolle, Shakeitha Henfield, Rashan Brown and Katrina Seymour 4x400m.
With the team set to depart on Wednesday in route to a Training Camp in Berlin, head coach Tyrone Burrows said the team is a good one and has many chances to step on the medal podium.
"When we look at the women, Sturrup and Ferguson-McKenzie have broken the 11 second barrier which places them in the medal hunt.  Amertil is currently running 51 seconds this season, and if everything works out for her, she should be in the hunt to get into the finals," said Burrows.
On the men's side, Burrows is so far pleased with the performances of Brown who has been competing mostly on the European circuit having run a season's best of 44.81 seconds.
"Brown has been winning races on the European circuit which is the main goal for an athlete no matter the time.  Miller who will join Brown in the 400 meters has been training at home under the guidance of Frank ‘Pancho’ Rahming assisted by myself," informed Burrows.
With the field events being The Bahamas best medal area in past World Championships and Olympic Games, Burrows said Moxey has earned the right to represent the country by winning the long jump at the Central American and Caribbean Championships.
"This is Moxey first World Championship since 2005 and he looks to be hungry and ready to compete.  Barry recently jumped the ‘B’ standard in the high jump, and when we look at his series of jumps from Slovenia where he qualified, he cleared the heights until 2.31 meters where he failed on three attempts," said Burrows.
Burrows admitted that the selection committee did in fact have a challenge with the men's 4x400 meter relay team.
"It's no secret that we have had some challenges with our men's 4x400 meter relay team as two top ranked 400 meter athletes went down with injuries at Nationals.  Right now it's going to be a challenge for us, but we faced this challenge in Beijing, so when we reach to camp the quartermilers know its all about business in getting the hardware," explained Burrows.
With George Cleare being the only new member of the coaching staff, Burrows said as long as the coaches can work together, the end results will be great for The Bahamas team.
