Local Journalist Publishes First Book

With this opening line from ‘The Two Islands’: "I once lived across the street from a man who made his living listening to the conversations of stars;" the book "Dreams and Other Whispers" through its author Rupert Missick Jr. leads us into a world where nighttime imaginings and flashbacks paint a landscape of literary pieces filled with hope, joy and passion.

“Dreams and Whispers” by Rupert Missick Jr.

"Dreams and Other Whisper" is a collection of short stories which illustrate the quirks of our fellow humans, as well as the meaningful and whimsical moments that mark all our lives.

In the stories ‘The Two Islands’, ‘The Valley of Doves’, ‘The Boy and the

Butterfly’ and ‘Seaweeds’, Missick addresses issues such as intolerance, spirituality and love- sometimes in a fairy tale like manner, other times in a matter-of-fact way.

The book also contains poems which seek to voice some of the dreams and whispers we all carry inside of us.

Missick says he wrote "Dreams and Other Whispers," simply because: "I wanted to tell stories that people would like well enough to carry inside them for a long time and perhaps share with others."

This philosophy is expressed, true to his style, in the introduction of "Dreams and Other Whispers," where Missick writes: "Our lives are just like stories; each day the beginning of a new episode in the miniseries we call our existence. The goal of everyone is to get that happy ending, whether that involves the obligatory prince on the white steed or the comatose princess hidden away from the corruption of human society, the slaying of a dragon, the conquering of the world or just obtaining peace, we want to know that when we close our eyes for the final time we have walked away from this world with ‘The End’ said in the most satisfactory tone of voice possible.

"The stories and poems in this collection are in a way a retelling of stories I have shared with my friends. They are patches of many emotions, dreams and whispers from my subconscious. They do not venture to tell the story of a life but are tiny shards of one that can be kept as curiosities to be dusted off and looked at once in a while."

Rupert Missick Jr. was born in 1982 on the island of New Providence in The Bahamas. He works at The Tribune newspaper where he presently serves as Chief Reporter. This is his first book.
