Drug Seizure At Container Port

In crime news from Grand Bahama, police are reporting a significant seizure of drugs at the Freeport Container Port.

Police say on Sunday, at about 12:15pm police officers went to the Freeport Container Port to investigation the report of a 40ft Container that showed some inconsistency while being x-rayed. 

As a result police officers joined up with the Bahamas Customs Officer, Security Personnel and other persons located the container which supposedly contained Frozen Seafood that was loaded in Peru and destined for Naples Italy.

The container arrived in Freeport on November 21st 2008.  The seal was then broken by Bahamas Customs and upon opening the door to the container officers found two black and blue knapsack bags one containing seven brown, black and red kilo packages of suspected cocaine and the other contained eight brown and red packages also with a quantity of suspected cocaine at the top front portion inside of the container.

The suspected cocaine estimated at 38 pounds was taken into police custody for safekeeping in New Providence.  Police are continuing their investigations.   

In other news from Grand Bahama, on Saturday night, police officers were in the area of Almond Road when they observed a dark male walking towards the road.

On looking in the direction of the police vehicle, he began acting in a suspicious manner and walked towards a maroon vehicle. 

As a result of his action the man was approached by the officers. Officers held onto the suspect's hands as he put something in his mouth but attempts failed and the suspect ingested what he had placed in his mouth.

A search of his person was conducted and while searching in the lining of a Black tam, which the suspect was wearing, officers found brown paper packages each with a quantity of suspected cocaine.

As a result, he was arrested and cautioned reference to Possession of dangerous drugs. The search then moved to the Maroon Buick Century, which the suspect was seen going into.

While searching the said vehicle, officers retrieved a brown pouch which contained a clear plastic bag containing a quantity of suspected cocaine.

The search continued 3 packets of "SILDENAFIL" a.k.a Viagra, two containing (3) tablets and one containing tablet was found.

The suspect was asked if he had a prescription for the items to which he did not reply. While searching inside the driver's door of the vehicle, a silver foil wrap containing a quantity of suspected marijuana was found.

The search then moved to the trunk of the vehicle and officers discovered eight additional packets of "SILDENAFIL" items found in the vehicle and did not reply.

Officers then conducted a search of a second vehicle, a Silver Chevy Cobalt LTZ registered to the suspect and while searching in a compartment in the said vehicle, a silver foil wrap containing a quantity of suspected marijuana was found.

The suspect was taken into police custody along with the items recovered and investigations are continuing. 

Back in the capital, police reported a drug arrest Friday afternoon when Drug Enforcement Unit officers were on patrol in the area of Seventh Street near Robinson Road when they stopped and searched the occupants in a black 1999 Chevy SUV.

Inside police found a female handbag, with one pound of marijuana. A 22-year-old female and a 33-year-old male were arrested. Both are residents from Marshall Road.  

  Police also reported that late Friday evening, Fire Services officers were extinguishing a large area of rubbish burning at the City Dump.

The contained fire provided some degree of smoke discomfort to residents living as far as Goodmans Bay in the Cable Beach area.

According to police, all efforts are focused on ensuring that this fire is suppressed in the shortest possible time. Heavy-duty machines from the Department of Environmental Health are being used to assist Fire Fighters in their efforts.

  Also, sometime Sunday evening, a fire damaged a home on the island of Rum Cay, which is owned by a male resident of the United States.

As a result, the man received second-degree fire burns to the face, arm and leg. He was airlifted to New Providence for treatment. The cause of the blaze is to be determined.

  On Sunday, police say around 9:00p.m, officers from Wulff Road Police Station Detective Unit executed a search warrant at a Blair Estates residence.

Upon arrival police arrested three men after finding a .22 handgun with no live rounds of ammunition. These men are 19, 21 and 26 years old. A fourth man who fled the area is actively being sought.
