Prominent attorney and Queen’s Counsel John K.F. Delaney has been appointed Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs and is scheduled to be sworn in at Government House this afternoon, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham announced yesterday.

Mr. Ingraham also announced that Mr. Delaney will be appointed to the Senate to fill the vacancy that has existed for several months.

Mr. Delaney will be sworn in by Governor General A. D. Hanna at 4:00 p.m.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Brent Symonette has been temporarily assuming the position since former Attorney General Sir Michael Barnett stepped down to take up the Chief Justice post.

Mr. Delaney’s portfolio will also include relations with the financial services industry and the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB). He will also be responsible for promoting and developing the country’s financial services.

Mr. Delaney, 45, was educated at St. Augustine’s College in New Providence and earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Birmingham and a Master of Laws degree from the University of London, England.

He was admitted to the English Bar in 1987 as a Barrister of Lincoln’s Inn. Later that same year he was called to the Bahamas Bar.

Prior to his appointments, Mr. Delaney was a member of the Higgs & Johnson law firm. He recently resigned from the law firm to take up the Attorney General post.

He had served as a partner at the law firm since 1994 and a managing partner since 2007.

He specializes in commercial litigation and financial services law and has, for years, been cited by international legal directories as a "leader" in his field.

He is a past Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Bahamas Bar Council, and a member of the International Bar Association, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

This will be Mr. Delaney’s second stint in the Senate as he served in the Upper Chamber as an FNM Senator from 2005 to 2007.

He has also served as a director of the National Insurance Board, a director of the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB), a member of the Road Traffic Authority and an evening lecturer at the College of The Bahamas. He is currently co-chairman of the Bahamas Trade Commission.

Mr. Delaney is married to the former Daphne Dean and is the father of a son, Amorae and twin daughters Dana and Maya.
