Mother And Son Charged

By Karissma Robinson
A man, his 52-year-old mother and another man were charged in a magistrates’ court yesterday on murder related charges just days after police issued an All Points Bulletin (APB) for one of their arrest.

Twenty-four-year-old Kevano Musgrove, a Haselmere Road resident, was charged with killing David Bowleg on February 25.

Bowleg was the country’s 15th murder victim for the year.

Police found Bowleg’s bullet riddled body in the back seat of a car in the South Beach area.

Police said he was known for several crime matters.

Jerad Holmes, 26, of London Avenue was charged with abetment to commit murder while Musgrove’s mother, Mary Chin-Neely, 52, was charged with accessory after the fact.

It is alleged that Chin-Neely helped her son hide from police.

The trio was not required to enter a plea to the charges.

However, Chin-Neely’s attorney, Krysta Smith, requested that her client be granted bail due to the fact that she has no previous convictions pending before the court.

"She has five children, and is definitely not a flight risk. I am begging the court to grant her bail. She is recently divorced and denying her bail would render her extreme financial hardship," Ms. Smith argued.

But the prosecution objected, due to the nature of the charge and the fact that Chin-Neely allegedly hid her son for nearly nine days.

According to the prosecution, Musgrove’s mother did not turn him into the police until his face was shown on the news and published in the newspapers.

But, Musgrove’s attorney disagreed.

In fact, Ms. Smith claimed the prosecution’s information was invalid.

She maintained that Chin-Neely turned her son in after learning that he was wanted for last month’s murder.

"The issue remains that there is a presumption of innocence. Mrs. Chin-Neely maintains her innocence in the matter," said Ms. Smith.

In the end, Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez granted the woman $10,000 bail.

She is required to report to the Wulff Road Police Station every Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Attorney Mary Bain was also pushing for bail for her client, arguing that Holmes fully cooperated with the police.

Mrs. Bain claimed officers at the Central Detective Unit (CDU) told her that during an identification parade – commonly referred to as a line-up – none of the witnesses pointed out her client.

Mrs. Bain said her client should receive bail, as there is no reference in the Bail Act with regard to the offence of abetment to commit murder charge.

However, the prosecution argued that abetment to commit murder is in fact a serious charge and as such should receive the same punishment as the person charged with murder.

Holmes was denied bail and remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) along with Musgrove.

A preliminary inquiry is slated to take place on March 12 to determine if there is sufficient evidence to have the matter tried in the Supreme Court.
